Honoring Our Seniors For Hispanic Heritage Month

October 3, 2023

All month long, we are paying tribute to all members of the Hispanic community as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. I have been blessed to recognize our senior citizens in Waterbury over the past couple of weeks.

We gathered for a celebration of matriarchs and powerful leaders, who were the pioneering backbones of Latin families in Waterbury. We remembered my late grandmother, Cecilia Bones and the grandmother of my children, my mother, Mrs. Ada Hilda Casiano Reyes at the Afro Caribbean Cultural Center on Grand Street.

Grandmothers hold the power in so many Latin families. God bless all of you!

A few days later, we celebrated Latin culture, music, and food at La Casa Bienvenida, which translates to the welcome house. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Colombians, and many other Hispanic people celebrated our roots in song and dance. It was an amazing afternoon filled with joy and laughter.

I will continue to honor and support or Hispanic community in Waterbury and the rest of Connecticut. Next week, I will co-host a panel discussion raising awareness of Connecticut's Paid Family and Medical Leave program with several of my Latino colleagues in the House of Representatives.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 11 from 12:00 P.M. - 1:30 P.M. in room 1D of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. CLICK HERE to see more about this event and to learn why you should consider applying for CT Paid Family and Medical Leave.
