Dear Neighbor,

Happy Friday! Below you can read about an update on the United Illuminating project, information about ArrayRx, the free prescription drug discount card, and more. You can click on the links below to navigate between sections.

United Illuminating Update
I want to share another UI update. Earlier this week the First Selectwoman organized a Town Hall with UI for the community. In my opinion, UI was not sufficiently prepared or transparent. Members of our community raised legitimate concerns and asked thoughtful questions and received no clear answers. If you would like to read more about the meeting, you can read this article from the CT Examiner.

We are all working together, neighbors, town hall, and the state delegation to request UI withdraw their application and refile it with the CT Siting Council to give the town and other intervenors appropriate time to engage experts. In its current state, UI's proposal is overly disruptive and destructive to our beloved community. Reasonable alternatives to UI’s proposal exist that are far less damaging and additional time is important to allow the intervenors to prove this case.

Please send your written concerns directly to the Siting Council as well. As you may know, the Siting Council is a quasi-judicial authority and it reviews all written comments submitted on the docket as evidence. They accept comments for 30 days after the final evidentiary hearing, which is currently set for Nov. 17th.

Additionally, the state delegation will be pursuing a legislative fix to the notification process and requirements for utility projects in this upcoming legislative session, which begins in February. As always, I am available for any questions or concerns you have on this project. Please don't hesitate to reach out: Jennifer.Leeper@cga.ct.gov

Updated Voting Machines
The machines we use in elections are what keeps democracy going! Connecticut's existing machines, which were first put into use in 2006, are beginning to show signs of aging. These funds will be used to purchase new ballot-counting tabulators for use in elections and primaries statewide. #YourVoiceYourVote🗳️

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
This month and all year long, I'm committed to fighting for those affected by breast cancer here in Connecticut.

The tough reality is that Connecticut has some of the highest incidences of breast cancer in the country. At 136.6 per 100,000, the rate of female breast cancer in Connecticut’s population – the second highest in the U.S. after Washington D.C. – is considerably higher than the U.S. rate of 122.7 per 100,000.

Despite the high rate of incidence of breast cancer in Connecticut, the state’s 20.8 per 100,000 death rate is comparatively low – tied with North Dakota and lower than 21 other states. The age-adjusted mortality rate is lower than the national average in part because Connecticut’s screening rate is high.

I commend organizations like the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative and the Connecticut Early Detection and Prevention Program for the work they put in everyday to address this critical issue in our state, such as awarding grants to local groups and providing critical services to residents across the state.

And a special shoutout to the Norma Pfriem Breast Center, a Fairfield County-based organization that does incredible work in the area providing patient care and raising awareness. Below, you can see a list of great events they're hosting this month.

We will never stop working to find cures, address the needs of patients and their families, and make treatments affordable.

Town Youth Council
There's a great opportunity for high schoolers looking to get involved in the community: Town Youth Council. TYC is an advisory board, comprised of high school students from each grade level. The council meets during the school year to plan and implement programs and discuss issues pertaining to Fairfield youth. Council members serve all 4 years and also donates their time to help run various programs and special events such as the Town's Tree Lighting, a Holiday Breakfast, the Annual Easter Egg Hunt & more! Growing Happy and Healthy Kids
On Monday, October 9 from 7:30-8:30pm at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Southport Clubhouse (385 Center Street, Fairfield), Fairfield CARES is hosting Parent2Parent Conversations: Growing Happy and Healthy Kids. The goal of the event is to have a conversation about helping your kids grow into happy and healthy humans and the role of developmental assets in that process. Raising a child is a constant rollercoaster of ups and downs, and this event seeks to provide a space to talk these issues through with like-minded parents and guardians, and to learn how to help your child be the best version of themselves. If this program sounds like it would resonate with you, I highly encourage you to check it out.

October Calendar of Events
Experience Fairfield has released their October calendar of events, which includes Restaurant Week, sporting events, and of course, Halloween on the Green! There's something for everyone in this calendar, so I hope you'll take a look.
