On Tuesday, I was very excited to be able to join Mayor Justin Elicker, Senate President Martin Looney, Rep. Juan Candelaria, Alder Sarah Miller, New Haven Economic Development Director Mike Piscitelli, and New Haven Deputy Director of Economic Development Carlos Eyzaguirre, at Fair Haven School, to announce very crucial safety improvements on Grand Avenue that will begin in 2024. This long awaited 3-year project will focus on many traffic safety upgrades including the repaving of roads, new sidewalks, and better lighting.
There will also be a new public plaza for community events, and renovations to the vacant and deteriorating Strong School to create mixed use affordable housing and more community space.
The setting for this press conference at the Fair Haven school could not have been more fitting, as the safety of our students as well as citizens who travel this widely used stretch of road near the school and the Grand and Ferry intersection is paramount.
As I said in my comments from the article and video, Fair Haven has always been the most welcoming part of the City of New Haven, and this project will only help enhance that.
I would like to thank all of the state and local public officials, staff, community leaders, members who have worked in collaboration on this very important project to bring it to fruition.
