Dear Neighbor,
Happy Friday!

This week, I want to take you behind the scenes and tell you about the public hearing process and some of the bills my committees are debating.

Just last night, we had a hearing in the Committee on Children from 3pm-12am. We listened to testimony on bills ranging from HB 1271: An Act Concerning School and Public Libraries, a bill on early educator pay equity, a bill on children's welfare, and more.

I was proud to support early childhood education, teachers, advocates and librarians. Your voices were heard, and we will continue working hard to make a positive impact for our children and community.

Below is the midnight crew!
I also want to talk about some of the most important bills being debated on my committees. In the Committee on Children, we had a public hearing where we heard testimony on SB 1217: An Act Providing School Meals to All Students, a bill I proudly co-sponsored with my colleagues. Like its name suggests, this bill would provide free school meals to all students in Connecticut. We had over 180 people submit testimony in support of this bill. Studies have shown that kids that are well-fed have more energy and learn better in school, so I was proud to co-sponsor this common sense bill!

In the General Law public hearing, we heard testimony on HB 5112: An Act Prohibiting Pet Stores from Purchasing or Procuring Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits. The goal of this bill is to prevent pet stores from purchasing animals from unethical breeders such as "puppy mills," which breed dogs for profit without ensuring proper care.

This bill prohibits pet shops from purchasing, acquiring, or selling dogs, cats, and rabbits, but allows them to provide space for licensed animal shelters and nonprofit rescue organizations to showcase animals available for adoption.

These are just some of the bills my committees have heard testimony on. If you're interested in testifying on a bill yourself, visit this website for information on how to sign up. I would love to hear from you!

Below, you can see a list of all the upcoming public hearings next week.

In the rest of this week's eblast, you can read about my meeting with future business leaders of America, honoring our local firefighters, and more. You can click on the links below to navigate between sections.

Town Hall with Sen. Slap and Rep. Demicco
Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a town hall with Senator Derek Slap, Representative Mike Demicco, and the wonderful residents of Farmington. Your ideas and feedback inspire me and strengthen our community. I promise to continue to work hard for you in Hartford to ensure your voices are heard and your needs are met.

Future Business Leaders of America Day

This week I got to meet with some of Connecticut's best and brightest at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Day celebration, including some of Farmington High School's very own!

FBLA inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and innovative leadership development programs, and I was proud to see some of their work firsthand.

You can watch the press conference on the event here.

Meeting with the League of Women Voters

Last weekend I had an incredible discussion with the League of Women Voters, covering crucial topics like the environment, housing, healthcare, education, and early voting. The insightful questions from the League members and the audience truly made the event special. Feeling inspired and looking forward to more positive change!

"Coldest Night of the Year" Charity Walk
This year I'm proud to be participating in the "Coldest Night Walk," which raises money to support and serve people and families experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness in our community.

Proceeds will go to two groups: The Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness and the Community Renewal Team. These are two amazing groups making a real difference in our state.

If you can, please donate to our cause, or you can even sign up to join our team!

You can read more about this great cause here.
