Dear Neighbor,

Representatives Leeper, Keitt, and I would like to share the following statement on the tragic passing of Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber:

Absorbing the news that our dear friend, Bill Gerber, has died is difficult for us personally and for our entire community. Everyone who knew or interacted with Bill experienced his gift of making those around him feel better with his enthusiastic presence and joyful demeanor. He entered every room with that big smile and was always quick with a joke, a movie quote, a funny quip, and his hearty, contagious laugh.

Bill had an insatiable curiosity and seemingly endless energy. He loved Fairfield deeply and worked tirelessly to make it better, safer, and more welcoming to all. He was eager to tackle a challenge, bring people together, and fight for the causes he believed in. Bill has left a mark on this town that will never be forgotten, and he has left his stamp on the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him.

Jessica, John, and Gillian- Bill loved nothing on this earth more than you three. We hope your hearts will be filled by his enduring love, as well as the outpouring of love and community support, and that this will help sustain you in the days and weeks ahead. You all have been forced to prove your strength more times than is fair. You are in our thoughts constantly. Please know we, and all who loved Bill, are here to journey alongside you as you grieve losing your husband and father.

As Fairfield grieves and works through this heartbreaking loss, we are fortunate to be in the steady, capable, and caring hands of Acting First Selectwoman Christine Vitale. Christine's years of service to our community have prepared her to navigate the difficult transition ahead, and we are here to support her in every way we can.

To honor Bill, I hope you will take a visit to any of the following locations to sign a condolence book in his memory and to honor everything he did for our town:
  • Old Town Hall or Independence Hall, Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Bigelow Senior Center, Friday, July 18 from 9am-4pm
  • Fairfield Main Library and Fairfield Woods Branch Library, Saturday, July 19 from noon-5pm
You can write a message about a special memory you have, support for the Gerber family, or simply sign your name.

And if you are interested in hearing about one of the many lives Bill touched, I hope you will take a few minutes to watch this touching video made by Arav Kapoor, a Fairfield resident who interviewed Bill on his YouTube channel the GeoPolitical, and developed a special relationship with him after. Arav perfectly describes what made Bill such an amazing person.

We will miss you so much, Bill.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend. As always, please feel free to reach out directly with your ideas, questions, or concerns. You can reach me by phone at (860) 240-8585 or (203) 522-3037.

Take care,

Cristin McCarthy Vahey
