Waterbury Bond Funding and Road Work Ahead

Big changes are coming to West Main Street! The Board of Alderman has approved an $18 million bond to support a $28.9 million redevelopment project from Riverside Street to the Waterbury Green.

The work will include major underground upgrades to water, sewer, and storm drainage lines—essential groundwork for the exciting streetscape improvements ahead.

Following completion of the underground utility work, the city will use a portion of a $23.1 million federal RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) grant to begin the streetscape phase of the project. Of that federal award, $9.8 million is allocated directly to West Main Street improvements. Design is already underway for the streetscape project, which is scheduled to begin in November 2026 and will include:

  • Reducing West Main Street to one travel lane in each direction
  • Adding a bus stop pull-off
  • Installing a shared bicycle lane between Riverside Street and the railroad bridge
  • Creating a green strip on the south side of West Main between Thomaston Avenue and the railroad bridge
  • Standardizing roadway width for improved safety and accessibility

Full transformation expected by 2027!
 

The City of Waterbury's Engineering Department recently released its milling and paving schedule, expected to begin Monday, August 18, weather dependent.

Please note:

  • Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Expect delays/detours – plan alternate routes.
  • No street parking during work hours.
