Our fight in Bethel is part of a bigger problem

October 27, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, CT Insider published my op-ed on why Connecticut’s affordable housing law, 8-30g, urgently needs reform.

In Bethel, we recently faced a proposal from an out-of-state developer that would have forced a 75-unit building onto a narrow residential street where our fire and police raised serious safety concerns. And we’re not alone. From Cheshire to West Hartford to Simsbury, towns across Connecticut are seeing oversized projects that strain infrastructure, silence local voices, and cut corners on safety.

I want to be clear: towns like ours are not against affordable housing. We welcome growth that is safe, sustainable, and truly affordable for working families. But housing should never come at the expense of local control.

As I wrote:

“Housing shouldn’t come at the expense of local control. If you strip away local input, you don’t get better housing, you get projects that cut corners and ignore safety.”

With the special session on housing scheduled for November 12, now is the time to ensure reforms to 8-30g are done openly, responsibly, and with communities at the table.

Thank you for staying engaged on this critical issue. I’ll keep fighting to make sure Bethel, Danbury, and every Connecticut town has a real voice in shaping our future.

Sincerely,

Raghib Allie-Brennan
State Representative
