Waterbury Hospital To Remain Open Under New Ownership

November 12, 2025

On Wednesday, during our special session, I was proud to join my House colleagues to approve legislation preserving access to health care at Waterbury Hospital. We voted in favor of a deal for the University of Connecticut Health Center to buy the hospital for $13 million, preventing a potentially devastating closure for our community.

Mayor Paul Pernerewski joined the Waterbury delegation in
celebrating the passage of the bill in the House on Wednesday.

This acquisition not only ensures that Waterbury Hospital remains open, but it also protects existing positions and strengthens the future of health care in the region. By partnering with UConn Health, we are securing long-term stability and expanding access to high-quality care for families who deserve it close to home.

The proposal also includes $390 million in state bonding over five years to support capital investments, showcasing our commitment to putting people over profits.

Thank you to Governor Ned Lamont and his staff for their leadership, dedication, and persistence in finding a solution that protects Waterbury's health care system and the people who depend on it.

The Connecticut Senate will vote on the measure on Thursday.
