Protecting Courthouses from Lawless ICE Conduct

November 20, 2025

In a special legislative session last week, we delivered meaningful progress for every person seeking justice, safety, and dignity in our courthouses, especially in Stamford.

We passed critical legislation to push back against unlawful actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We have seen too many videos and firsthand accounts showing ICE agents acting outside the law – violating individuals' rights and interfering with their ability to access justice. These actions don't just often violate individuals' rights: they also endanger bystanders, and prevent our police and prosecutors from protecting victims and witnesses and prosecuting criminals.

The bill includes several key provisions, including:

  • Prohibiting most detentions on courthouse property, ensuring people can safely enter courthouses without fear.
  • Protecting personal data, so private information held by state agencies cannot be misused for immigration enforcement.

These measures help ensure that everyone – regardless of their background – can interact with our state agencies safely, securely, and without fear of unlawful interference from ICE.

Thank you to the co-chairs of the Judiciary Committee, Rep. Steven Stafstrom and Sen. Gary Winfield, for leading this fight to protect our rights and the safety of our communities from overreaches by the Trump administration.
