Remembering Representative Kevin Ryan
I’m saddened to hear about the passing of State Representative Kevin Ryan. Kevin on many occasions walked me through the system, explaining the steps to take, and showing me how to the legislature worked.
Rep. Ryan was the kind of public servant who showed up — not just in Hartford, but in towns like New London. He attended community events, engaged with people, and supported local organizations. He wasn’t just a voice in the State House; he was a steadfast advocate for the working people across eastern Connecticut.
Kevin was especially helpful in guiding me through complex policy areas, including health insurance, state worker compensation, and pension protections. His knowledge and willingness to explain the details helped so many of us understand how to make meaningful, informed decisions for our constituents.
Kevin will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything you gave to this community and to those of us fortunate enough to learn from you.

By participating, you can find unique, personalized gifts while contributing to the local economy by keeping money within your community. Small Business Saturday fosters a sense of connection, strengthening neighborhoods and ensuring that local businesses, often the heart of their communities, continue to thrive.

Giving Back to the Community Thank you to all the incredible volunteers from the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, The Place for Community Wellbeing, the New London Area Food Pantry, Connecticut Foodshare, New London Police Department and the many community organizations & members who stepped up to help. Your long hours, early mornings, and steady dedication made a real difference for families who needed support.
Please know what you do matters. Access to food is one of the most basic needs a person has, and you make sure our neighbors don’t go without. You show up with compassion, patience, and a willingness to serve, and that kind of commitment strengthens our entire community.
We appreciate every moment you give, every bag packed, every delivery made, and every person greeted with dignity. You remind us that community isn’t just a word — it’s people caring for one another when it counts.
Thank you for being the hands and hearts that keep this work moving forward. Our city is better because of you.

Thanksgiving Meal Distribution at St. James I had the opportunity to stop by the Thanksgiving family meal distribution at St. James this week — and I want to give a genuine thank-you to the volunteers from St. James, the Salvation Army, the Connecticut Sun players and staff, and everyone in the community who came out to help. Because of you, 606 families received food boxes for the holidays. Moments like this matter. They remind us that when the community steps up together, we make sure no family is left struggling or unseen during a season that should be about warmth, dignity, and connection.

New London Fair Rent Commission New London has a Fair Rent Commission — and more people need to know it’s here to protect them.
Too many residents feel stuck when a rent increase hits them out of nowhere or when they’re living with conditions that aren’t safe. The Fair Rent Commission gives tenants a way to speak up, be heard, and get real relief without having to go to court or fight alone.
The Commission reviews complaints, looks at the facts, and can step in when a rent increase is unreasonable. They can delay or reduce a rent hike, pause rent if the home isn’t safe, and make sure landlords fix serious problems before charging more. And if a tenant is afraid of retaliation for speaking up, the law protects them.
They meet publicly at City Hall in Council Chambers, and anyone who needs help can reach out through the City’s Community Development office. This is a free resource, backed by city ordinance and state law, and it’s meant to keep people in stable housing.
In a city where rising housing costs are hitting families hard, we can’t afford to leave tools like this sitting on the shelf. Spread the word. Tell your neighbors. Let people know that if something feels unfair, they don’t have to face it alone. The Fair Rent Commission exists so New London residents have a real voice and a real chance at fair treatment.
Next meeting for Fair Rent Commission is listed on City of New London, Connecticut website to be the dates of Dec 10th and December 23rd, 2025. |

Connecting with Our YouthThe Child & Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut (CFA) searched for someone who could do more than run another standard youth program. They needed a leader who could see each young person as an individual, build trust, and create something meaningful for New London’s kids — something that actually fits them. They found that leader in New London’s own Whaler, Dom Griffin.Thank you Dom & CFA for shaping a program that truly stands out. Instead of a one-size-fits-all model, he’s helping build personalized support paths for every young person he meets. He listens to their interests, taps into their strengths, and then works with families to make sure each child has a solid network behind them. And at the heart of it all are real mentors and real-life connections that give our youth room to grow, rise, and step into who they’re meant to be — surrounded by people who guide them, challenge them, and remind them that their future is worth fighting for. His impact is already felt across the city. New London’s youth aren’t just getting services; they’re gaining direction, confidence, and a community that believes in them. Dom’s work deserves real applause for the doors he’s opening and the lives he’s helping transform.
