A Safer, Smoother Drive in the Works for Waterbury

May 11, 2026

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is moving forward with a plan to improve safety and traffic in Waterbury on Route 8 and West Main Street. Here’s what it will look like:

🚗 A new Exit 30D off-ramp:
CTDOT will move the Route 8 Southbound Exit 30D ramp to a new location at Watertown Avenue, directly across from Robbins Street (about 750 feet north of West Main Street). This change will create a safer, more straightforward connection for drivers entering the neighborhood.

↔️ Two-way traffic on Watertown Avenue:
Watertown Avenue will shift from one-way traffic to a two-way street, making it easier to navigate and improving local access.

🛣️ Bridge removal:
CTDOT will remove the two existing bridges that currently carry Route 8 and the Exit 30D ramp over Watertown Avenue as part of the redesign.

🚦 Improvements on West Main Street:
The project will also upgrade West Main Street and add a new traffic signal at Highland Avenue to improve safety and reduce congestion.

CTDOT expects to complete the design in spring 2029 and begin construction in the fall later that year.
