Dear Neighbor,

Groton Town Hall Recap
Thank you to everyone who attended our Groton Town Hall this week! It was great to speak with you all and to hear what is on your mind. It is important conversations like these that influence the work I do for you at the Capitol!

Funding for Shiloh Preserve
On Monday, Governor Lamont announced the awarding of more than $14 million in state grants to preserve 2,270 acres of open space and the creation of six new community green spaces in 22 towns and cities across Connecticut.

I'm happy to share that New London's Shiloh Preserve was granted $227,950! You can read more information on the land in the excerpt from the Governor's press release below:

This forested property on Soldier Hill is adjacent to the I-95 and Route 32 interchange. The 750-acre Connecticut College Arboretum property abuts this property to the north. Briggs Brook bisects the parcel, so this acquisition will protect the biodiversity and watershed as the impacts of climate change intensify. There are remnants of an abandoned quarry, old stone walls and pre- and Revolutionary War historic and cultural value for educational purposes. The main entrance is on Williams Street, which passes through the Hodges Square neighborhood and is linked to downtown New London via a bike lane, public transit, and a sidewalk. The parcel will be jointly managed by ALC and the Connecticut College Arboretum. They will establish hiking trails for passive recreational use and provide educational opportunities for the residents of New London and all who visit.

Summer EBT is Now Available
Summer EBT Benefits through the CT Department of Education are now available! Eligible children receive a total of $120 per child ($40 per month for three months) loaded onto their existing EBT card or a separate S-EBT card. If you are eligible, your child will receive benefits automatically, and you do not need to apply. Families not automatically enrolled are still able to apply for these benefits if they are under the 185% FBL threshold. To view the qualifications for those automatically enrolled and additional information for families interested in applying, click here.

If you have any questions, you can contact the S-EBT hotline at: 1-844-503-6871

Thank You to the New London Beautification Committee!
Every now and then, you walk past a space that catches your eye — not because it demands attention, but because it quietly transforms the mood around it. That’s what I experienced standing before one of the many flower-filled corners of New London, where color bursts from the ground like a garden of fireworks. It’s in these moments that we’re reminded just how much beauty is planted, nurtured, and sustained by the hands of those who care deeply for this city.

To the members of the New London Beautification Committee — thank you. Your work is more than seasonal plantings and trimmed hedges. It’s an offering of care, pride, and vision for what our city can be. From the vibrant flowers that soften busy intersections to the thoughtfully maintained green spaces that welcome visitors and residents alike, your efforts bring life and color to our streets. You remind us that public spaces can feel personal — like someone truly sees and values our community.

Your time, your labor, and your creativity are not unnoticed. You take on this work not for praise but because you believe in New London — and it shows. On behalf of every child who’s smiled at a splash of yellow marigolds, every elder who’s paused to admire a blooming planter, and every neighbor who walks by and feels just a little more proud of where they live — thank you. You are planting more than flowers. You are planting joy, pride, and belonging.
Please share some great things to show New London Appreciates them.

Meeting with Boxers Cassius Chaney and Shell Vincent
I had the great opportunity to hang out with Professional Boxers Cassius Chaney & Shelly Vincent Shelito’s Way Boxing and Fitness along with their teams and families at the City of New London, Connecticut Community Center. I was able to celebrate them and thank them for their years of giving back to our community.

Both Cassius and Shelly give and spend tremendous time with youth and young adults sharing, educating and training about boxing and success. Cassius & Shelly signed their Banners hanging from the rafters in the hallway Dedicated to members of New London that entered Professional sports and Olympic teams. We are so thankful with their busy schedules that they could stop by to show love.

Operation Fuel Expands its Scope to Generation Power CT
Operation Fuel, which has been operating for decades to help Connecticut residents with utility costs, recently rebranded to Generation Power CT to better support its expanded scope. Generation Power CT offers assistance with electricity, water, and other utilities, as well as remediation and weatherization services for properties. Its new title reflects these additional offerings. In 2024, Generation Power CT gave millions of dollars in aid to thousands of families across the state.
