May 1, 2025
On Wednesday, we recognized the 3rd Annual Food Insecurity Awareness Day at the State Capitol. Food insecurity, as defined by Feeding America, is a condition in which people don't have enough to eat & don't know where their next meal will come from. In the United States, 47 million people, including 14 million children, experience food insecurity annually.
Food insecurity around our state, by the numbers:
- 1 in 6 children in Connecticut is food insecure
- 468,150 people face hunger across the state
- 88 million meals need to close the CT meal gap
- Last year, food insecurity in CT rose by 23%
