Dear Neighbor,

I was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting for Van Wilgen’s Garden Center as owners Ryan and Kate celebrated the grand opening of their new Southington location. This exciting investment transforms a long-vacant Agway property on Queen Street into a vibrant, locally owned business that will serve the entire community.

It was great to join state and local leaders, including Department of Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlbert, in recognizing a multi-generational family business that has supported Connecticut agriculture for over a century.

At yesterday's ceremony, I presented Ryan and Kate Van Wilgen with an official state citation and offered congratulations to them and their team of employees. Events like this highlight the importance of preserving our agricultural roots while continuing to grow our local economy. I wish Van Wilgen’s continued success in Southington.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

Thank You for Your Service

I recently had the honor of attending the Veteran Lunch at The Summit at Plantsville, a special event dedicated to thanking and celebrating our veterans. The luncheon, organized by Barbara Blau and her team and generously catered by MISSION BBQ, provided a great opportunity to connect with residents, staff, and community members who support our veterans.

It was truly meaningful to see such heartfelt recognition for their service and to share in an afternoon of gratitude and camaraderie. Events like this serve as an important reminder to honor those who have served our country.

Connecticut Business Day

This week, I attended Connecticut Business Day 2026 in Hartford, where business leaders from across the state gathered to discuss key legislative priorities and the future of Connecticut’s economy. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers and the business community to support job growth and long-term sustainability.

It was also great to connect with Southington resident Bob Borkowski and former Southington resident Andy Stifel—always a reminder of how engaged our community is both locally and across the state.

DOT Update

Traffic Signal Upgrades

The state is planning a major upgrade to the traffic signals along Route 10 in Southington to improve safety and reduce travel times. The project will replace the current system with a computerized network that adjusts signals in real time using sensors and centralized controls.

Nine intersections will receive new equipment and fiber optic connections, including Queen Street, North Main Street, and Main Street locations. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2027.

Planned intersections along Route 10 include:

  • Queen Street at Flanders Street/Cemetery Driveway
  • North Main Street at Curtiss Street/Shopping Plaza Access Drive
  • North Main Street at Hobart Street
  • North Main Street at Mill Street
  • North Main Street at High Street and Merrell Street
  • North Main Street at Center Street and Riccio Way
  • Main Street at Columbus Avenue and Berlin Avenue
  • Main Street at Route 120 and School Access Drive
  • Main Street at Old Turnpike Road

Wrong Way Driving

The state will upgrade its wrong-way driving detection systems on our highways in Southington. The nighttime work will take place from Tuesday, April 7 through Friday, April 10 from 7 p.m. – 3 p.m. at:

  • I-84 West at Exit 29
  • I-84 in both directions at Exit 31
  • I-84 in both directions at Exit 32

Congrats to Dawn Miceli!

I’m proud to congratulate Dawn Miceli on receiving Southington UNICO’s 2025 Gold Medal of Honor. Having served alongside Dawn on the Town Council, I know firsthand her dedication and impact on our community.

A true mentor, she has led countless initiatives, from community celebrations and local business support to arts and volunteer projects, always inspiring others through her service and leadership. I look forward to further recognize Dawn at a celebratory dinner in her honor on May 20 at the Aqua Turf Club.
