This week, at the opening of the legislative session, I took the oath of office and was sworn in as State Representative for the 81st District. I am honored to continue to represent the people of Southington in the General Assembly and I look forward to hearing your ideas and comments as we move through the session.

This year will be very busy at the Capitol with discussions regarding the state’s fiscal guardrails, energy, education funding, roadway safety, and much more.

House Speaker Matt Ritter has named me an Assistant Majority Leader and appointed me to serve as Vice-Chair of the Select Committee on Special Education.

I will also serve as a member of the Public Safety and Security, Education, and Veterans and Military Affairs Committees.

I look forward to working hard to improve the quality of life for Southington residents and all Connecticut citizens.

I was proud to have my family by my side in the House Chamber on this special day, and am extremely grateful for all of their support and encouragement.

Please continue reading below for other noteworthy items, and thanks as always for taking the time to read them!

State of the State

At Opening Day on Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont's 2025 State of the State address focused on key issues facing Connecticut, particularly the high costs of housing, electricity, healthcare, and higher education.

On the state’s economy, Gov. Lamont touted Connecticut’s financial stability, including the well-funded rainy day fund, reduced debt, and improved pension security. He emphasized his administration's efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare, childcare, and education, while also praising the state's efforts to cut middle-class taxes and increase the minimum wage without negatively impacting job growth.

The governor called for a broader conversation about how services are delivered, emphasizing the need streamline processes like permitting and regulation to foster economic growth and address the housing shortage.

Gov. Lamont also called on tackling rising tuition rates at the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State University system.

CyberKnights Kick Off
It was exciting to attend the CyberKnight’s Kickoff Event and First Robotics Competition (FRC) Game Reveal alongside students and parents of Team 195.

I spoke to them about the importance and need for a manufacturing workforce in CT, and how their experiences on the team will benefit them in college and beyond. Southington has an exceptional robotics program and I am proud to support its efforts.

Wrong-Way Detection Installations
The CT Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will install a Wrong Way Detection System on I-84 Exit 31 eastbound next week, between 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 13, to 2 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17.

The exact day and timing of the installation will be dependent on weather and work conditions. Be on the look out for road crews, as the exit will be closed, with traffic personnel and signs directing motorists. Drivers are advised to maintain safe speeds.

The system uses cameras to detect wrong-way vehicles and activates flashing red-lit signs to alert drivers. It also notifies CTDOT's Highway Operations Center and local State Police in real time. Learn more at https://portal.ct.gov/wrongwaydriving.

Knights of Columbus Hoops!
On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Knights of Columbus will host a Basketball Free Throw Challenge at Saint Luke Catholic School (Snow Date Sat., Jan 18) at 133 Bristol St., Southington.

The event is free for all kids ages 9-14 (as of 01/01/2025). Out-of-town participants are welcome. Registration starts at 12:30 p.m., with the competition beginning at 1 p.m.

Future Engineers Wanted

The Southington Library and EmpowerSTEM invite children ages 7–12 to design and test bridges on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10:30 a.m. Participants will tackle a scenario to reduce congestion on the George Washington Bridge by creating a new 4,800-foot, double-deck bridge.

The program may last up to two hours, and adults must remain in the library while children participate. Registration is required; click here for more details
