Celebrating Accessible Parking Awareness Day

July 17, 2025

I was honored to join advocates, public officials, and the community in recognizing Accessible Parking Awareness Day on July 14, a day dedicated to promoting dignity, independence, and respect for people with disabilities.

The event, held at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Enfield, highlighted the vital role that accessible parking spaces play in ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can fully participate in public life. Protecting these designated spaces is not just about convenience. It's about civil rights and equal access. Connecticut thrives when we make our communities more inclusive.

In our state, individuals can obtain accessible parking placards on a temporary or permanent basis with certification from a medical provider. These placards are a lifeline for many, and it's crucial that they are used responsibly and lawfully. Misusing a placard, allowing others to use it, or failing to renew it properly denies access to those who genuinely need it. Respecting the rules reflects how much we value the safety and independence of our neighbors.

I'm deeply grateful to the advocates, partners, and community leaders who continue to champion accessibility in all aspects of public life across Connecticut. I would also like to thank Governor Ned Lamont and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz for recognizing Accessible Parking Awareness Day and supporting efforts to build a more equitable and inclusive Connecticut.

Let's continue to work together to ensure that our public spaces work for everyone.
