Celebrating Three Kings Day

January 11, 2024

One of my favorite parts of any new year is the Three Kings Day celebration in Waterbury and around the state. The holiday is known as the Feast of the Epiphany. It is a Christian celebration observed on January 6th. Three Kings Day commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. These wise men dress up and bring ceremonial gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Families love this holiday because it's a cultural celebration, an opportunity to teach children the biblical story of the Magi, and the gifts for the kids!

Students in the ESL class above at Chase Elementary School learned about the history behind Three Kings Day before opening presents! It was a pleasure to stop by and see the smiles on their faces!
Every child in this first grade classroom at Washington Elementary School also received a gift.

Three Kings Day also involves communal celebrations, bringing families and communities together. Sharing meals and participating in festive activities foster a sense of unity and togetherness. I saw this first hand at several venues last weekend including the Hispanic Coalition.

Many cities and towns observed the holiday including Hartford where I dressed up as a wise man and rode a camel in a parade! I had so much fun waving to the crowd as I tried to stay on the camel. It was an experience I will never forget!
From my family to yours, I hope you had a wonderful Three Kings Day!
