Help With Unpaid Utility Balance & New Flights Out of New Haven

March 22, 2024

Utility companies are offering payment plans to some customers with unpaid balances. I'll break down how the plan works and who to contact if you need assistance.

Avelo Airlines continues to expand at the conveniently located Tweed New Haven Airport. Please read below to find out what new destinations will be available starting this summer!

The city of Waterbury is working on converting a vacant church in the 75th district into a center to help the homeless and those re-entering society. I'll dig deeper into the plan to transform the Sacred Heart Church property.

Help with Unpaid Utility Balances
Utility companies have started reaching out to residential customers with unpaid balances to sign up for payment plans to avoid interruption in their current services.

Those with financial hardships or medical issues due to a serious illness have not been eligible for termination due to nonpayment since March 2020, which stems from the COVID-19 pandemic, and a longstanding statutory moratorium that annually safeguards Connecticut residents from winter shut-offs from November 1 to May 1.

If you get one of these notices, my office can work with you to help contact utility companies directly to set up a payment plan to avoid service disruption. These plans charge no interest, and all customers qualify at least once for one or more of the plans. Please see the graphics below for contact information for the utility companies and the available payment plan options for eligible customers.

Additionally, New Opportunities, Inc in Waterbury can also help. Please visit  www.newoppinc.org or call (203) 575-9799.

After connecting with utility companies, customers may additionally contact PURA’s customer affairs unit for specific questions regarding payment arrangements. As a reminder, utility companies will never call threatening to shut off power and demanding immediate payment.

Please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or feedback.

Three New Non-Stop Flights
Avelo Airlines is adding three more non-stop flights from Tweed New Haven Airport. You will be able to fly directly to Houston, Texas, Saint Louis, Missouri, and Traverse City, Michigan starting in June. Avelo is the only airline in Connecticut offering non-stop routes to those destinations.

Avelo also announced it is creating about 35 new jobs in New Haven by adding a sixth aircraft at Tweed. Officials believe this expansion will lead to economic development in the area.
Governor Lamont and New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker welcome
the continued growth of Avelo at Tweed Airport.

Church To Be Transformed Into Homeless Shelter
The city of Waterbury plans to buy a vacant church and transform it into a center to help those in need. Crews envision repurposing the Sacred Heart Church, rectory, and school to serve the homeless and those who are re-entering society after being incarcerated.
Organizers hope to convert the church on Wolcott Street into a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, the rectory into a halfway house, and the school building into a re-entry center with job training.

The city plans to buy the entire property from the Archdiocese of Hartford for $950,000,000. The goal is to open the homeless shelter by next winter.
