Two Muslim Students Attacked at School

March 14, 2025

Our community is shaken after two Muslim girls were attacked at Wallace Middle School. I joined activists who believe Waterbury Police should investigate the case as a hate crime. Witnesses claim that for two weeks, other students taunted the victims before a physical assault occurred in gym class, where their hijabs were ripped off.

On Wednesday, we learned the students involved are no longer attending Wallace Middle School and have been disciplined to the highest level. Officials are also investigating if other students may have been involved in the prior taunting and bullying leading up to the attack.

My heart goes out to the 13-year-old Egyptian twins, who went to the hospital bloody, bruised, and deeply shaken. No child should ever have to endure such fear and harm, especially in a place that should be a safe environment for learning and growth.

We must work together to foster a culture of respect, kindness, and inclusion for all students, regardless of their background or where they come from. This is why I am co-sponsoring House Bill 6872, which strengthens penalties for those who commit hate crimes. This bill is a crucial step toward creating safer communities for everyone.

Strengthening consequences for these acts sends a clear message that hate and discrimination have no place in our society. By taking a firm stand against hate, we build stronger, more united communities where all individuals can live without fear and with the respect they deserve.
