Expanding Broadband Internet Access

May 14, 2025

Connecticut is continuing to work toward closing the "digital divide" throughout our state with another investment in expanding broadband internet access to underserved areas.

From telehealth and emergency alerts to education and remote working, reliable internet access is a daily necessity and a recent $10 million award through the ConneCTed Communities Grant Program will be used by internet service providers to further build out the state's broadband infrastructure.

New Update

This round of funding will support expanding broadband service in 44 cities and towns, including 10 Distressed Municipalities, ensuring high speed internet access to an estimated 3,800 additional homes and small businesses. For an interactive map of locations awarded in this grant click here.

Funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, the ConneCTed Communities Grant Program was established with a goal of universal access to fast, affordable, and reliable broadband. To date, with this second round included, the program has committed $34 million to support broadband expansion to 5,582 residences and businesses in 116 municipalities.

A major focus of this initiative is supporting broadband upgrades in multi-dwelling units in need of faster, more reliable internet. To help with this goal, the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection has launched a survey to assist with identifying these needs.

Internet access has become synonymous with our daily lives including healthcare, banking, and employment, so it is critical to continue to invest in broadband. The good news is that over 90% of Connecticut households now have internet connectivity.
