LEADERS OF THE BLACK AND PUERTO RICAN CAUCUS ON FEMA DECISION TO RESCIND HOUSING ASSISTANCE TO PUERTO RICAN FAMILIES

Chair of the legislature’s Black and Puerto Rican Caucus State Representative Christopher Rosario (D-Bridgeport) and Vice-Chair, State Representative Brandon McGee (D-Hartford/Windsor) issued the following statement in response to the latest decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to rescind Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) housing benefits to Puerto Rican families who came to Connecticut after Hurricane Maria:

“Many people continue to wonder how Puerto Rico – a U.S. territory has been left basically on its own dealing with the aftermath of the Hurricane Maria devastation. There are many families who have been forced out of their homes due to many parts of the island still being in the dark more than four months after this catastrophic storm, and FEMA’s weak commitment to providing the necessary support has failed Puerto Ricans once again. This time, almost 40 families were told to pack up within hours and leave CT hotels they had under FEMA’s temporary housing assistance program. This decision is beyond unacceptable – it is cruel, inhumane and outrageous. We urge FEMA and the federal government to reverse this unfair decision and provide the necessary funds for these American citizens, who are in extreme need of shelter, particularly during the cold days of winter.
