Help For Veterans & Black and Puerto Rican Caucus Priorities

February 28, 2025

Connecticut remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting our veterans. Keep reading for a deep dive into how we're helping our heroes who have devoted their lives to serving our great nation.

The Black and Puerto Rican Caucus is dedicated to advancing policies that will improve our Black and Brown communities. I'll share some of this year's priorities that affect marginalized communities, such as Bridgeport.

I'm sure some of you have received W-2s and other forms, which means it's time to start working on your taxes. There are several reputable services offering help for free. Scroll below to find out if you are eligible.

Veterans’ Property Tax
The Connecticut House of Representatives also took a significant step in supporting veterans by passing legislation that provides much-needed tax relief for those who are 100% permanently and totally disabled due to their military service. This bill recognizes the sacrifices made by these veterans and aims to ease their financial burden by reducing property tax obligations, allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned income for essential needs.
By passing this measure, Connecticut reaffirms its commitment to honoring and supporting those who have given so much for our country, ensuring they receive the assistance and recognition they deserve.

Priorities of Black And Puerto Rican Caucus

I stand strongly with the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus in championing our shared legislative priorities this session. My colleagues and I have listened closely to your concerns, challenges, and aspirations. We are committed to working collaboratively and tirelessly to advance policies that will create meaningful, lasting change in our communities.

The BPRC recently unveiled six legislative pillars that will shape our advocacy this session:

  • Education
  • Career advancement
  • Justice
  • Housing
  • Health and human services
  • Economic empowerment and stability

These priorities tackle critical issues such as early childhood education, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, renter’s rights, immigration protections, tax stability, and so much more. Together, we can build a more just and equitable Connecticut for everyone.

Empowering Our Young Men in Bridgeport
I had the pleasure of speaking to young men over the weekend about the importance of being a strong role model and pillar of the Bridgeport Community. We had an engaging and thoughtful discussion about the values of leadership, responsibility, and service, and how each of them has the power to inspire positive change in the lives of those around them. The event was part of a two day workshop in conjunction with a nonprofit called Color a Positive Thought.
Bridgeport thrives when its young people are empowered, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential. I look forward to continuing these important conversations and working together to build a stronger, more united community.
