Medical Debt Erased for 40,000 More Residents

December 27, 2025

The state has announced a major step forward in helping residents burdened by medical bills, erasing some or all medical debt for approximately 40,000 Connecticut residents. Those impacted by this latest round of relief should have received a letter in the mail this month notifying them that their debt has been forgiven.

This initiative works by purchasing qualifying medical debt at a fraction of its original cost—often for just pennies on the dollar—and then eliminating it entirely. For families struggling to keep up with everyday expenses, this relief can be truly life-changing.

This marks the third round of the initiative, which has now eliminated $198 million in medical debt since December 2024, helping 160,000 Connecticut individuals and families regain financial stability and peace of mind.

Medical debt is one of the leading causes of financial stress, even for people who are insured. This program ensures that an unexpected illness or emergency does not permanently derail a family’s finances.
