Hamden Day at the Capitol, Renters' Rebate, and Autism Acceptance Awareness Month

April 10, 2026

Hamden Day at the State Capitol was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase everything that makes our town such a vibrant, welcoming, and unique community. From local organizations and small businesses to community leaders and residents, the day truly highlighted the spirit and pride that define Hamden.

It was great to see so many familiar faces and new ones alike come together to celebrate Hamden. Events like this remind us of the strength of our community and the importance of working together to support and uplift our town.

Qualified applicants may receive rebates of up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single individuals. The rebate amount is determined using a graduated income scale, as well as the total rent and utility payments (excluding telephone) made during the previous calendar year.

Applications must be submitted through your local municipality’s assessor’s office or a designated social service agency. The application period is now open and will run through September 30. Please note that no extensions are permitted, and all applications must be received by the municipality no later than September 30.

Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the experiences and identities of individuals with Autism.

This month highlights the importance of moving beyond simple awareness toward true acceptance, fostering understanding, promoting inclusion, and supporting those on the spectrum in all aspects of life. It is an opportunity to uplift voices, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for equitable access to education, employment, health care, and community life.

Autism Acceptance Month encourages communities to embrace neurodiversity, recognize the strengths and contributions of Autistic people, and create environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

The Envelope Initiative is at
Hamden PD

The Envelope Initiative is designed to support individuals with cognitive or physical disabilities during traffic stops or emergencies. These free envelopes can hold identification, important documents, and personalized notes to help first responders better understand your needs, reducing confusion and creating safer, more respectful interactions.

The envelope is available at local DMVs, police departments, and community centers. It's voluntary and easy to use while promoting understanding, trust, and safety for everyone.

Community Events

On Sunday, April 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. join the Sleeping Giant Park Association for a guided hike about early spring wildflowers at Sleeping Giant State Park (200 Mt. Carmel Avenue, main parking). The hike will be led by SGPA Board Member and retired U.S. Forest Service Scientist, Chris Fagan. Participants will learn how to identify some of the Giant’s ephemeral wildflowers, and the incredible ways they have evolved to thrive in the early spring.

This will be an easy to moderate hike, 2 hours or so with plenty of stops for discussion. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable, supportive shoes with good traction. A day pack with snacks, water, sunscreen and any other essentials is recommended. Out of consideration for other participants, dogs are not permitted on SGPA hikes.

Registration is required, click here to access the form.
