Standing in Support of Fellow State Representative Corey Paris
August 18, 2025Friends and Neighbors,
I write today to express my unequivocal support for State Representative Corey Paris. Last week, Rep. Paris issued a simple message on social media: to remain vigilant in light of reports of ICE activity, and to look out for one another. His message was rooted in compassion and concern for his community.
Instead of being received as the act of public service that it was, Rep. Paris has endured a wave of vitriol, harassment, and racist attacks, including threats against his family. This campaign of intimidation is inherently un-American and completely unacceptable.
Attorney General William Tong has made clear that Rep. Paris’s words are firmly protected under the First Amendment. House Speaker Matt Ritter rightly called his message a “powerful” reminder of neighbors caring for neighbors.
They are right, and we must echo their support.
This is what true patriotism looks like: not silence in the face of injustice, but the courage to speak out for those who live in fear. Rep. Paris demonstrated patriotism by putting people before power and by choosing unity and compassion over indifference.
As Rep. Paris himself said, his fear is nothing compared to the fear undocumented people live with every single day. That is why his leadership matters, and why we must all commit to standing against warrantless raids, conducted by unidentifiable agents acting under the color of law, that tear families and communities apart.
I urge you to join me in supporting Rep. Paris, condemning the harassment he has faced, and reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities.
That is the work of justice.
That is the work of democracy.
And that is the truest form of patriotism.
