Legislative Update: Bills Passed June 8, 2021

June 9, 2021

Today is the final day of the General Assembly's 2021 regular session. The gavel comes down at midnight ending a productive year in the legislature.

Our most significant accomplishment yesterday – actually, early this morning – is a new biennial state budget that passed with broad bipartisan support.

HB 6689

The $46.4 billion budget invests heavily in Connecticut's cities and towns, local nonprofits and families needing vital assistance. The budget includes a $2.3 billion surplus – a sign that brighter days are ahead for the Connecticut economy.

HB 6688

Trucks cause extreme wear and tear to our transportation infrastructure – roads and bridges and with no means to recoup the cost to fix those roads taxpayers are all left to shoulder the burden. HB 6688 will allow for a user fee only on large trucks so that trucking companies pay their fair share to repair and maintain our roads.

HB 6687

Access to healthcare is a right that should not be defined by immigration status. HB 6687 will expand HUSKY healthcare coverage – regardless of immigration status – to children 8 and under, pregnant women, and women who have just given birth.

6687

The biggest bill expected to come before the House today is the legalization of cannabis for adult recreational use.

The General Assembly adjourns our regular session at midnight.
