Gas Tax Savings and More for CT Residents

April 5, 2022

This week, the House passed an emergency-certification that will ease some of the financial burden on Connecticut residents and working families whose wallets and budgets have taken a hit due to rising gas prices and record-breaking inflation levels.

The bill we passed will:

  • suspend the 25-cent-per-gallon gas tax from April 1st through June 30th
  • offer free bus rides through June 30th
  • create an additional sales tax-free week on clothing and shoes under $100 from April 10th through the 16th

Please stay tuned as we craft our budget adjustments in the next month or so. More tax relief is coming!

Funding for Tennis Court Renovations
I am excited to share that the Bonding Commission agenda includes $3 million for renovations to the tennis courts at Conard High School and Hall High School! The funding will be used to replace current asphalt courts with tension concrete courts, with new exterior fencing and nets. This is a great investment for our town and I am so excited that students and our community will be able to enjoy these courts for years to come.

The funding is expected to be approved by the Bond Commission during their meeting on March 31st. I will update you after the vote!

Abortion Legislation
The right to choose is under threat like never before. The U.S. Supreme Court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade come June. Although Roe is codified into our state statute and abortion will remain legal here, other states are passing legislation to ban abortion within their borders and criminalize those who seek and provide abortion care in other states. We are working on two pieces of legislation in the Connecticut General Assembly to expand access and protection for reproductive health care.
  • HB 5261, An Act Increasing Access to Reproductive Healthcare, would authorize certain advanced healthcare practitioners other than physicians to provide abortion-related care, including physician assistants, advanced practice nurses and nurse midwives. The Public Health Committee will vote on this bill in today's committee meeting at 12:30pm. You can watch here
  • HB 5414, An Act Concerning Protections for Persons Receiving and Providing Reproductive Health Care Services in the State, addresses out-of-state efforts to criminalize or impose civil liability for abortion care provided legally here in Connecticut. This legislation was heard in a Judiciary Committee Public Hearing on Monday. You can watch here

Rep. Blumenthal and I wrote an op-ed for the CT Post about these two legislative measures. Click here to read.
