CT Child Tax Credit Providing Boost to Families
Apply by July 31

Connecticut's first ever child tax payment has just gone into effect and it's already a massive success!

Since applications were first opened to the public on June 1, more than 90,000 households have filed to receive the $250 per child tax payment (up to three children). This was included in the $650 million tax relief package that House Democrats approved as part of the 2022 state budget to give much-needed financial relief and flexibility to working families across Connecticut.

If you have a child born before Jan. 1, 2022 and haven't yet applied, I want to remind you that there is still time to apply to receive your check!

This tax payment is available to single parents who earned less than $100,000 and two-parent households that made less than $200,000 during the 2021 tax year.

For more information on the payment and to submit an application with the Department of Revenue Services before the July 31 deadline, please click HERE.

JUNETEENTH Panel Discussion & Flag Raising Ceremony

We had a great Juneteenth Panel Discussion about the history, power, resilience, and unbroken spirit of Black Americans. It was held at the Legislative Office Building. Big Appreciation to all those who made this possible.

This past session, we voted on historic legislation to establish Juneteenth Independence Day as an official state holiday, which the governor signed into law a few days ago in front of the Amistad Ship replica at the Waterfront Park in New London. While the first legal observance of the day will begin on June 19, 2023, I cannot overstate enough the importance of Juneteenth as we approach this year's date.

For me, this is more than another holiday. It represents a step in progress to a future where Black people will no longer be oppressed, and the lasting and damaging effects of slavery in American history be learned and told. It is personal and emotional.

This holiday is a reminder of how far our struggle has come and how far we must still go. I proudly celebrate the resilience, bravery, and strength of those who have carried the banner of freedom through generations of slavery and discrimination that continues to this day.

I encourage everyone to take time to learn more about our history and to celebrate with us the importance and significance of the Juneteenth holiday. We owe it to our ancestors, to ourselves and families, and to our future generations.

New London First to Rollout the New Science of Reading (SOR) Masterclass
This week, I joined Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker, LT Gov Susan Bysiewicz, State Senator Patricia Billie Miller, Mayor Michael Passero and many other State & Local Leaders at C.B Jennings Elementary School to announce New London, CT to be the 1st place in the state to the rollout the new Science of Reading (SOR) Masterclass.
This will provide professional learning for educators at participating districts. The first masterclass cohort will begin on June 29, 2022, and will include 11 participating districts.

Special thanks to State Senator Patricia Billie Miller for bringing this Legislation before the General Assembly for us to support, and CSDE Staff for the hard work of bringing it to fruition.

New London is Connecticut’s Third Cultural District
And more good news for New London!

This week we announced that a section of New London has been named Connecticut’s Third Cultural District. In the midst of Make Music Day, state and local officials made the exciting announcement.

"We are New London, and we are on the map,” Nolan said Tuesday. “New London is growing, and we’re not going to stop. We’re going to climb higher on the ladder, we’re going to show the rest of the communities in Connecticut how it’s done. People are going to follow us.” To read the news story, please click here.
