Dear Neighbor,

 

I hope you and your family are staying healthy and safe.

 

There were a number of events and activities last week in New London and I'd like to give you an update along with some news items.

TONIGHT: Family Night at Huntington Street Baptist Church

TONIGHT, September 9 from 5:30PM-7:30PM we will be having our Family Night at Huntington Street Baptist Church (29 Huntington Street). This is a FREE event for families. Enjoy games and leadership activities for the kids, plus a free dinner for everyone who attends. There will also be backpacks and school supplies for anyone who may need them. This is a great opportunity to come socialize with other members of our wonderful community!



Dinner will include salmon, chicken tenders, baked chicken, broccoli, yellow rice, and much more. Please text (860) 381-4228 if you plan on attending so we make enough food for everyone. Have a good evening looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Back to School Supply Drive

I stopped by MT. Olive SDA Church’s Back to School Supply Drive on Monday. Big thank you to MT. Olive for organizing the giveaway and luncheon, and another big thank you to all those who donated supplies. It’s always great to welcome the kids and get them ready to head back to school! Wishing all our students a great school year.

Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival is This Weekend

The Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival is happening this weekend! The 3-day festival seeks to “Unite our Shores” by providing a family friendly weekend event filled with opportunities to learn about and interact with: -military personnel and the vessels that our U.S. military use to protect our shores and its citizens; -maritime services including government agencies and vessels that protect our fisheries, natural resources, and environment; and -other sectors of the maritime industry ranging from aquaculture and fisheries to other commercial vessels and ventures focused on everything from transportation to energy.

Highlights of this year's festival include the first-ever Mermaids and Sea Monsters Parade on Saturday at 2PM, children's activities, fishing clinics and a 9/11 tribute on Sunday. For a full schedule of events, click here.

Thames River Heritage Park Season Ends Sunday, Sept. 11

Fall is here and the Thames River Heritage Park season is ending on Sunday, September 11th! Be sure to celebrate this weekends Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival by hopping aboard the water taxi.

We Are New London Parade

Put it on the calendar! Our official parade, "We Are New London" is back on Sunday, September 25 at 12PM. Those wishing to participate are asked to gather on Washington Street near State Street at 1PM. The parade will proceed along State Street to the Whale Tail fountain for a ceremony and remarks.

Sound Community Services Opens New Young Adult Residential Program

Sound Community Services, Inc. will be hosting an event on Wednesday, September 28, from 11AM-2PM at 21 Montauk Avenue for the ribbon cutting of its newest young adult residential program, Jason Hyatt Center. The ribbon cutting will be from 11AM-2PM with a light lunch served from 12PM-2PM.

 

Sound Community Services has a rich history of providing Southeastern Connecticut with outstanding mental health and substance abuse supports through their outpatient clinic, social rehab, community support, and residential programs. Their five residential programs have transitioned hundreds of people successfully into the community.

Young Single Mom's Luncheon

Are you a single mother? We want to celebrate you! Leave the kids with the babysitter and come enjoy a luncheon all about you on Saturday, October 1 at 2PM at OIC of New London (106 Truman Street). Soccer Shooting Competition

The New London Elks Lodge is sponsoring a free soccer direct kick competition for kids ages 4-13 this Sunday, September 11 at Caulkins Park. Registration begins at 9AM, but pre-registration is required. Register your children by contacting Erika Russo at secretaryerika360@gmail.com with their name, age, and gender. Open to all children from New London, Waterford, Montville, and East Lyme.



First place winners in each division will be awarded a prize and proceed to district competitions with the chance to progress to state and national competitions. For more information, click here.

New London Little League Seeking a Manager

The New London Little League has a team full of kids eager to play but is seeking a volunteer to coach them. Games are held on Saturday mornings through October, and the practice schedule is up to the manager. If you are interested or have any questions, email NewLondonLittleLeague@gmail.com

FRESH New London Inviting the Community to Walk the Five Garden Sites 

FRESH New London invites the community to walk their five garden sites – viewing all the different ways FRESH grows food in our city. On an almost two and a half mile route, walkers will experience our snack beds, community gardens and the terraced urban farm, learning about innovative farming techniques that nurture a wide variety of local produce!



The FRESH walk is a major new community fundraiser supported by Yale New Haven Health: L+M Hospital, Bank of America, Connecticut Sun & Anthem Health, Fiddleheads Food Coop, the Health Improvement Collaborative, the Nature Conservancy, Sift Bakery, and many other local businesses and organizations! Connecticut Sea Grant Award Opportunity for Artists 

Through its competitive program, the Arts Support Awards Program, the Connecticut Sea Grant will award up to $1000 to an artist or group of artists. The winning submission will be selected on the basis of aesthetic quality, relevance to coastal and marine environments and Connecticut Sea Grant themes, as well as its potential reach and impact on non-traditional “audiences.”

To be eligible, you must be an artist or groups of artists who live in Connecticut, or non-Connecticut artists whose work is related to Connecticut’s coastal and marine environments and/or Long Island Sound are eligible for funding consideration. All artistic disciplines are eligible. Previous recipients of Sea Grant Arts Awards are not eligible for five years.



The application must be submitted electronically by 4:30PM on Monday, May 15. For more information, click here.

Are you part of an organization that is interested helping your members voice their opinions about what programming the new community center will offer? The New London Community Center is looking for a diverse set of organizations representing groups/people within New London, and the Center is looking for groups to organize focus group meetings with their members.
