Dear Neighbor,

The work of the legislative session has really begun! This week we had an organizational meeting of the Committee on Veterans' and Military Affairs. This session, I'm proud to serve as Co-Chair along with Senator Marx. We are looking forward to working together with the members of our committee to assist our veterans and military.

The Committee on Veterans' and Military Affairs (VMA) shall have cognizance of all matters relating to military and veterans' affairs, if you have questions and concerns in regards to the "VMA" committee please reach out.

Throughout the session, you can find live footage and recordings of the Committee's work here

Community Meeting at the Senior Center

This week I had the opportunity to attend an educational community meeting at the Senior Center to get a preview of how the upcoming Lead Service Line Replacement Program will take place.

This is big news - as soon as funding is made available, New London will become the first in the state to have all lead service piping changed! I'd like to give a big thanks to Violia, Arcadis and the City for collaborative efforts keeping New London Happening.

If you wish to have your line done or have question please go to: leadfreenewlondon.com. You can download the form to apply or go into the office to pick it up.

FYI: Housing Coming to Bayonet Street

I had several calls asking about the housing coming to Bayonet Street in New London, and I wanted to be sure to let you know that I had the great opportunity to stop by and get an update.

Back in October we had a ceremony/groundbreaking of the 28-unit mixed-income apartment building praised by many of the speakers as "setting the precedent for future equitable housing." The 28 units will consist of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Nine will be leased at market-rate rents while the rest is a mix of varying rents based on income. Six units will be set aside for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism.

I'm happy to report that they are coming along great! Phase #1 development is on task to be complete September/November 2023. I'd like to once again thank ECHO, DOH and the City of New London leadership for helping this come to fruition.

Installations and Revisions of Traffic Control Signals

The Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to upgrade existing traffic control signal equipment or install new traffic control signal equipment to meet current Department standards at 11 locations in the cities and towns of Mansfield, New London, Plainfield, Portland, Deep River, Stonington, and Westbrook. At applicable locations, pedestrian control features (countdown pedestrian indications, accessible pushbuttons, and sidewalk ramps) will be upgraded to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety. CTDOT will coordinate with the city/town during the design phase.

Traffic Control Signal – Full Replacement:

094-211 New London Route 213 (Ocean Ave) at Willetts Avenue

It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development. At this time, it is anticipated that an informational meeting or formal public hearing will not be necessary.

The design plans for this project are expected to be completed in May 2024 with a tentative advertising date of July 2024.

Anyone interested in requesting information on this project may do so by contacting Gregory R. Palmer, Project Manager at (860) 594-2748 or via email at Gregory.Palmer@ct.gov. Please make reference to Project No. 0172-0513.
