House Passes Bill Improving Road Safety

May 26, 2023

I am proud to co-sponsor House Bill 5917, which implements the recommendations of the Vision Zero Council to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. This bill passed the House of Representatives this week, and it addresses the spike in roadway fatalities in our state.

HB5917 calls on the state to allow red light and speed cameras in municipalities, motorcyclists would be required to wear helmets, and towns would be required to submit street safety plans. The proposal now moves to the Senate.

This legislation is absolutely necessary because the streets in Hartford and other cities are increasingly becoming more unsafe due to a large number of senseless tragedies. We're seeing more reckless drivers and countless deadly crashes in the past three years. Please watch the video below to see my remarks in the House Chamber in support of the bill.
