Hartford Summer Camps Get State Funding!

June 1, 2023

A pair of local summer camps received state funds for new learning opportunities over the next two summers. The money comes from the Connecticut Summer Enrichment Program, which is designed to connect students whose education was compromised during the pandemic. The state is awarding 110 organizations more than $13 million in grants, which will serve approximately 66,000 Connecticut students across both summers. CLICK HERE to learn more about the grant program.

The Equestrian Summer Day Camp at the Ebony Horsewomen Inc. Equestrian and Therapeutic Center will receive around $45,000 for this summer. The eight-week day camp offers outdoor activities, exercise, and horseback riding from June 20 – August 10.

I joined Governor Ned Lamont and Labor Commissioner Danté Bartolomeo last week to meet the team at the Ebony Horsewomen Inc. Equestrian and Therapeutic Center. We also highlighted the Connecticut Youth Employment Program, which connects young people ages 14 to 24 with meaningful jobs that help them build professional networks, improve career readiness, and earn a paycheck.

The Ebony Horsewomen Inc. Equestrian and Therapeutic Center has been hiring young adults through the program for the last eight years. Located in Hartford’s Keney Park, the nonprofit organization provides equine-assisted therapy and trains mental health professionals through certification and continuing education courses. Patricia Kelly, the CEO of Ebony Horsewomen Inc., her staff, and volunteers are doing an amazing job serving as role models in our community.

We can't forget about Organized Parents Make A Difference! The grassroots organization will receive $50,000 in expansion grants, which will go to the summer program at the E.B. Kennelly School on White Street. Students at the four-week camp will learn about the effects of climate change and pollution on our communities.

The program will serve students that will be entering Kindergarten in the fall through students entering the 8th grade. The camp runs from July 5 – July 29. CLICK HERE to learn more about the program and to get the registration form.

I encourage every child to take advantage of our wonderful summer camps in Hartford. I thank Governor Ned Lamont and Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker for all their work involving the Summer Enrichment Program.
