Breast Cancer Awareness Month
May we honor those we have lost, offer strength to those who continue to live with breast cancer, and work to protect the health of future generations.
 
New London State Pier Tour with Gov. Lamont
This week I had the opportunity to attend a tour at the City of New London, Connecticut New London State Pier Property with Governor Ned Lamont along with State Representative Christine Conley, Commissioner Katie Dykes, David Ortiz Government Affairs, Northeast for Ørsted, Joesph Nolan President/CEO of Eversource for a press conference to discuss Connecticut Singing deal with Rhode Island and Massachusetts for future offshore wind projects that will power around 300,000 homes in Connecticut once built.
 
Coast Guard Cutter Eagle Tour
I had a great time cruising with U.S Coast Guard Academy Assistant Superintendent Captain Eva Van Camp to board the America's Tall Ship”, The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle out on the horizon of the Thames/Pequot River. We had a great time meeting with the amazing Captain of the Eagle Jessica Rozzi-Ochs, met with Superintendent Michael Johnston of U.S. Coast Guard Academy along with Commanding Officer of Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton Captain Kenneth Curtin JR, Senator Cathy Osten and Mayor Michael Passero. We enjoyed learning and hearing from Cadets, friends and family. A beautiful day.
 
Lyman Allyn Art Museum Funding
Congratulations City of New London, Connecticut Lyman Allyn Art Museum. This will be an amazing space that will open new opportunity and collaboration for our community. Looking forward to celebrating and seeing this come to fruition.
 
New London Fire Department Grants
The New London Fire Department recently received two federal grants totaling $38k for smoke & CO detector installation and a peer fitness training program.
These grants come through the Assistance to Firefighters grant program and the Fire Prevention and Safety grant program. Thank you to Joe Courtney for visiting Fire Chief Thomas Curcio, Fire Marshall Vernon Skau, and their team to hear how the funds will help keep firefighters and the people of the City of New London, Connecticut safe.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Recipients
Great excitement going on in City of New London, Connecticut New London Public Schools announced four of our high school students that have been awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship!
This honor is for those students who capture the spirit and vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. This scholarship was developed to help students in attending two and four-year colleges.
We are excited to honor these students on October 19th at the Scholarship Award Dinner.

Educator's Month
World Teacher’s Day was on October 5th, Mystic Aquarium expressed gratitude for all that teachers do to help children learn and grow!
Mystic Aquarium will offer complimentary general admission for educators AND school support staff from October 5th to 31st*.
Each free educator should make their own reservation and must use their affiliated school/organization email to reserve tickets. You will also need to present your school ID or other proof of employment along with your ticket upon entry. Household family members of educators receive $10 off general admission and must be accompanied by the free ticket holder.

New Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection
Glad to see Gov. Ned Lamont chose Ronnell Higgins, Yale University’s associate vice president for public safety and community engagement, to succeed James Rovella as commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

State Police K9 Training Unit Recognition
Congratulations to the Connecticut State Police K9 Training Unit. This week they announced the graduation of the 240th K-9 Training Troop specializing in Narcotic Detection. Five (5) K-9 Teams specially trained to detect and alert their handlers to the presence of Illicit Narcotics will begin assisting law enforcement in keeping our communities safe upon graduation from training today, 10/06/2023, at the Connecticut State Police K-9 Training Unit.
The graduating narcotic Detection K9 Teams are capable of searching for and locating dangerous illicit narcotics within buildings, passenger and commercial motor vehicles, luggage, parcels, open areas, etc.
Law Enforcement Agencies interested in requesting the assistance of narcotic Detection K9 Teams to support active investigations or requesting seats in future Narcotic Detection K9 Training & Certification Classes may contact the Connecticut State Police K9 Training Unit at (203)630-5656.

Pass the Guitar Event
The bi-annual Pass the Guitar is back at the Hygienic Art Park this fall. On October 7 everyone, young and younger will enjoy 2 hours of lively acoustic guitar by some of the area's favorite musicians. Each artist plays one song and then passes the guitar to the next artist. At this Pass the Guitar artists may play a song geared toward children. This is always a wonderful time.
Pizza slices will be for sale as well as beverages from juice to wine. Come join a perfect afternoon (rain or shine) in downtown New London with your neighbors who all wish to stand together to care for the homeless in our backyard. Proceeds benefit the New London Homeless Hospitality Center. Additional donations to NLHHC can be made at www.nlhhc.org.

The Downtown New London Assoc brings back a popular tradition of celebrating New London at its Annual Fall Food Stroll. Participants experience a vibrant downtown New London filled with people, music, good cheer and welcoming businesses.
Stroll through different restaurants, shops, arts and cultural institutions in downtown New London. Bite-size samples of dishes or drinks that range from seafood to sweets, organic to ethnic and everything in between at the District’s finest eateries are yours with an advanced purchased wristbands as your ticket to taste! Community Level Up Fall Basketball Clinic Registration
Youth Activity: Community Level Up Fall Basketball Clinic Registration is now open! We will have Fall Basketball Clinics for boys and girls between 7-14 yrs old. This year we also are offering a Social Circle group and Open Classroom time for all of our students! Social Circle is a safe place where we allow students to express anything they may have been holding in and and we also discuss different issues around the world and our community. Open Classroom is a time where students can come use resources in our education room. I will post schedule below:
