Dear Neighbor,

Funding for the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center
Great news! The Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center has been awarded $163,150 from the State of Connecticut Government Shutdown Relief. This funding will go directly to immediate food distribution, helping families and individuals in our community get the support they need. This is a great start, and we look forward to continuing to fight for more funding to address the ongoing challenges caused by the government shutdown.

A big thanks to the United Way for their hard work and for standing strong in the fight to feed the people, and thank you to Connecticut Foodshare and the many officials for helping make this possible!

WIC Availability

FYI: WIC benefits to help families buy food will not be interrupted. Most SNAP households with a child under the age of 5 and/or a pregnant, postpartum, or nursing mother are eligible for WIC. However, more than 50,000 CT residents are estimated to be WIC eligible but not enrolled.

If you fit these criteria, apply for WIC online or go to health.ct.gov to take an eligibility prescreener for WIC and several other programs.

Generation Power CT Emergency Energy Assistance Program
A reminder that the Generation Power CT (GPCT) Emergency Energy Assistance Program will run through Monday, November 10! This program provides a one-time grant of up to $500 to help eligible Connecticut households with electric, gas, or fuel expenses.

Increasing energy costs are a challenge for many in the state, but through this program, GPCT has helped to provide families across Connecticut with secure access to heat, power, and water.

All GPCT energy programs are available to income-eligible households making up to 75% SMI gross household income. Each income-eligible household that receives a GPCT Energy Assistance Award will receive up to $500 toward a future fuel delivery or toward a past due-utility bill. For the best chance of approval, and to make full use of this once-per-12-months grant, GPCT strongly encourages households to apply for assistance when you are most in need. GPCT has three remaining Energy Assistance Application Cycles for this winter season:

  • November 2-10, 2025
  • January 2-10, 2026
  • March 2-10, 2026

Funding for Sheffield Pharmaceuticals
I'm so happy to announce New London's Sheffield Pharmaceuticals was awarded an $800,000 grant from the Strategic Supply Chain Initiative "to increase production capacity, expand existing facilities, or establish new operations in Connecticut." It's always exciting to see a local business recognized by the state in this way, and I can't wait to see how they use these funds!

Operación Amor
I was so happy to visit & donate to Carmen Benitez-Rodriguez and her amazing team with Operación Amor — a local outreach that’s been serving others for the past nine years, now reaching multiple countries and sending backpacks filled with essentials, hope, and love across the world.

This year, they’re collecting and packing backpacks out of one of our great churches here in New London — Church of the City. When I dropped off a backpack and supplies, I saw they had already packed over 400 backpacks for this year’s trip to Honduras — each one filled with care and purpose to help children stay in school and focused on their future.

Carmen and her volunteers work tirelessly to collect donations, recruit sponsors, and prepare supplies for families in need. What began as a dream guided by faith has grown into a powerful example of what happens when purpose meets perseverance.
Grateful to see people like Carmen and her team doing God’s work — not just talking about love, but showing it across communities and borders.

Visit www.operacionamor.com to learn more or get involved.

Visit to the YEP Mentoring Circle
I had the great opportunity to stop by the YEP Mentoring Circle, where Dom Griffin (Youth Engagement Partnership) continue to create meaningful spaces for our young people to grow, learn, and lead.

This month’s session was a huge success — filled with energy, connection, fun and food. A special thank-you to local entrepreneur & amazing baker - Stephanie Lopez, the owner of Late Nite 860, for sharing her entrepreneurial journey with the youth, and showing the youth how passion can turn into purpose (also teaching how to make some amazing cookies).

Boots on the Ground Resource Fair
Thank you to the Covenant Shelter of New London & Step Up New London for allowing me to collaborate with them to provide the City of New London, Connecticut the first Boots On The Ground Resource Fair. We had a great time eating, meeting, dancing with friends and neighbors, and having the opportunity to see and hear about the many resources available in the area that assist our community to be better. Thank you to everyone who came out and participated.

Standing with New London Tenants
Last week, I stood with New London tenants calling on Alpha Capital to show compassion, transparency, and accountability. When a company purchases homes that dozens of families, seniors, and individuals rely on, they inherit a responsibility to treat those residents with dignity. Notice to quit - No-fault evictions put our neighbors at risk especially as the seasons is getting colder— we’re asking for fairness, time, and real relocation support for those affected. Housing is a human right, not a business strategy.

MAMBO Bar & Restaurant Reopening
I had the great great opportunity to make it to the soft reopening of the new MAMBO Bar & Restaurant at 200 Bank Street City of New London, Connecticut.

I am so happy for Ramon, who is also owner to Ramon's Auto Detail Collision and Repair on Truman Street in New London. Ramon is a great example of a person in the community that gives back to the community. He is now investing twofold in our great city. We are so happy and proud that Ramon & his family choose New London as a place to call home and invest in. Thank you for being part of our city.
