I attended several pop-up “Ice Out for Good” rallies in Bethel and Ridgefield over the weekend, along with many of you, in response to the extrajudicial killings by ICE of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Keith Porter Jr. of L.A., and the escalation of kidnappings and terror by this regime’s paramilitary force paid for with our tax dollars taken from our ACA health care tax credits.

Like countless Americans, I am terrified by what is happening: an unlawful expansion of heavily militarized ICE operations against civilians in communities across the country, disregard for civil rights and due process, and the proliferation and horrific conditions of the detained in privatized, brutal concentration camps on U.S. soil.

I join our neighbors to rally not only to honor the memory and lives of Renee and Keith and countless others’ whose murders were not captured by video, but in solidarity with the families and advocates who are rightfully demanding transparency, accountability, and a renewed commitment to the laws and the Constitution, to protect both our communities and our constitutional values. We must keep up the demands for ICE OUT for Good in our state, and demand our tax dollars be invested in CT for Connecticut services, Connecticut schools, and Connecticut’s needs.

We aren't done and we aren't going away. I will be speaking at this candlelight vigil at the tennis courts of Helen Keller Middle School, 360 Sport Hill Road, in Easton on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 5 p.m.

The message is simple: ICE's brutality and abuse of power are un-American and must cease. Now.
 

Animal Caucus Meeting

On Jan. 27, the Animal Welfare Caucus will meet at 10 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. Please come and share your ideas for how we can improve our laws protecting our furry friends ahead of the legislative session slated to begin in early February.

Addressing Federal Budget Cuts

Earlier this week, I joined fellow legislators and advocates in urging Governor Ned Lamont to establish a state-level solution to address recent federal budget cuts and to continue deploying emergency funds approved during the special session.

With the legislative session a few weeks away, we are calling on the state to act now to ensure that children and families, seniors, and residents with disabilities remain fed and healthy, and that programs protecting access to affordable, accessible health insurance are preserved.

Anti-Trafficking Roundtable

Last week, I joined the Connecticut Lodging Association and the American Hotel and Lodging Association for an informative roundtable on human trafficking. With January recognized as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, it is essential that hotel owners, hotel staff, law enforcement, and legislators work together to raise awareness and strengthen prevention strategies.

MLK Day

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, during which, we remember Dr. King's dream and our duty to fulfill it. He widely advocated for the investment in Black communities, a guaranteed income, the right to decent housing, and adequate education for all. We will continue to push for progress in his memory.

Dr. King warned us in his 1967 speech, "Where do we go from here": (“Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Boston: Beacon Press, 1967) about the three evils of militarism, systemic racism, and systemic poverty. Now, we are seeing the red-light danger to our country and our future. We must work together to demand liberation from these intertwined evils that plague our society, and heed his legacy for the sake of community.
