Dear Neighbor,
Funding for Our District
I was thrilled to see our district receive funding from the State Bond Commission for the following projects:
  • $35,937,308 for Gold Star Bridge rehabilitation on I-95 Groton/New London
  • $250,000 for the City of New London for the planning for the redevelopment of Gordon Court senior housing
  • $250,000 for the Southeastern Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. for planning for a community for individuals in recovery on Coit and Reed Streets in New London

By supporting our most vulnerable through funding for senior housing and services for those recovering from addiction, all residents of New London will see major benefits that will uplift our community.

Dyslexia Awareness
I had the great opportunity this week to take part in the Statewide Dyslexia Awareness kickoff where I was able to hear about, and share about my history with Dyslexia. This is the start of a great campaign season to make sure those who make decisions for change invest in equitable student identification and support.

The Center in New London
Spent some great time at the City of New London, Connecticut The Center: A Drop in Community Learning & Resource Center Inc Open House and the Afterschool Alliance to celebrate the importance of afterschool program

“In communities today, 7.7 million children are on their own after school. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. Programs give young people opportunities to connect, explore, and realize their full potential. Join us, along with 8,000+ afterschool programs nationwide, in celebrating afterschool programs. We think every child who wants opportunities to learn and grow after school should have one.”

Addressing Homelessness Roundtable
This week I joined Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness and the Eastern Coordinated Access Network (CAN), for a roundtable conversation focused on addressing homelessness in our communities. This event brought together homeless services providers, local partners, and the community for a discussion about our collective work to solve homelessness.

'Time to Own' Program Funding
Great news for low and moderate-income, first-time homebuyers in Connecticut!

This week, the State Bond Commission approved $40 million in state funding that will be used to reopen the popular Time To Own program to a new round of applicants.

Time To Own has helped thousands of people buy their first homes since launching in 2022. The program provides forgivable loans for down payments and closing costs and has enabled individuals and families to achieve the dream of homeownership, fostering long-term financial stability and contributing to stronger communities.

To date, Time To Own has helped more than 4,800 homebuyers in 149 towns buy their first homes, more than half of whom are people of color. With the new funding allocation, Connecticut has invested $195 million in the program.
