Dear Neighbor,

Viewing of "Those People" Documentary
This week I had the opportunity to sit down with Professor Kevin Booker and students at Mitchell College to watch The Day’s documentary “Those People.” I was honored to join a panel with Ret. Lt. George Potts, historian and community advocate Nicole Thomas, and City Councilor Akil Peck.

We had some great open discussion on how New London turned tragedy into healing after the loss of Matthew Chew — transforming pain into purpose through The New London Talent Show & how it became a movement of unity, creativity, and conversation — breaking down racial divides and building community. "Those People" reminds us that when we come together with honesty and compassion, real change happens.

The documentary Those People, was produced by The Day newspaper, partnering with Curtis Goodwin & Frank Colmenares detailed how the talent show became a case study in "transformative justice," highlighting how community activism can improve lives.

Important SNAP Update
CT Department of Social Services - Please use your SNAP benefits before Oct. 31. If the federal government shutdown continues past Oct. 31, you may not be able to use any SNAP benefits left over from previous months until the federal government reopens. At this time, SNAP benefits already loaded onto EBT cards remain available for use to purchase food through Oct. 31.

We are working closely with Governor Lamont’s Office and federal partners. DSS will share updates as soon as we know more.

Open House at the Drop-In Learning Center
I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Open House at the Drop-In Learning Center. This year marks a special celebration of the 25th year of Lights On Afterschool and 55th year of The Drop-In Learning Center serving Southeastern Connecticut. The children and youth did an amazing job hosting this event. Thank you to the Exec Dir. Reona Dyess, and the amazing staff for the great work and service you provide our community.
