Dominican Republic Celebration & Inaugural Flight to Punta Cana

March 5, 2025
The Hartford community continues to strengthen its deep and enduring ties with the Dominican Republic by celebrating its rich culture, history, and contributions. We proudly raised the Dominican flag at Hartford City Hall to honor the country’s independence. It was a powerful symbol of unity and the vibrant presence of the Dominican community in Connecticut.
The celebration was filled with lively conversations, music, dancing, and delicious food. I was honored to present Rep. Antonio Felipe, the Chair of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, with a citation recognizing his historic achievement as the first Dominican legislator in Connecticut history. His leadership and dedication pave the way for greater representation and inspire future generations to serve their communities.

Speaking of la Republica Dominica, it’s never been easier to visit the beautiful island nation!

I had the honor of boarding Avelo Airlines’ first direct flight from Bradley International Airport to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! The inaugural flight took off on February 21, marking the launch of year-round service twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. This route is a game-changer, making travel more accessible and bringing families, friends, and businesses closer together.

We received a warm welcome once we landed in Punta Cana, complete with live performances, music, and a true display of Dominican hospitality. Avelo’s team demonstrated outstanding professionalism, and local dignitaries joined us in celebrating this exciting milestone. It was a pleasure to share in the excitement with passengers who can now travel more affordably and conveniently between Connecticut and the DR.
The new direct route is more than a flight – it’s an investment in our community, our regional economy, and our cultures. I am proud to stand in support of the Dominican community and Avelo Airlines as we expand opportunities for travel, tourism, and business growth.
I would also like to thank Jim Olson, Head of Communications at Avelo, Giselle Cortez, former Vice President of Airport Operations at Avelo, Cirilo Bonilla, a Dominican and President of Club Juan Carlos Duarte, Giovanni Rainieri, Airside Director of Operations at Punta Cana International Airport, and everyone else who was involved in making this new direct route a reality.
