Three Kings Day, New Mayor, and Opportunity to Meet Me

January 10, 2024

I would like to wish you a happy new year! It's a wonderful time to embrace new beginnings, set fresh goals, and reflect on the adventures that lie ahead. The start of a new year often brings a sense of optimism, a change to turn the page and start new, whether it's pursing personal aspirations, making positive changes, or simply embracing the opportunities that come our way. In 2024, I am focused on passing new legislation prioritizing the 6th district in the upcoming legislative session.

One of the first big celebrations of each new year is Three Kings Day, and the crowd had a great time in Hartford. Please keep scrolling to see how the community came together this past weekend.

I would also like to congratulate Hartford’s new mayor, Arunan Arulampalam, and our elected city council. They were sworn into office earlier this week.

And you have an opportunity to meet me in person, ask questions, and share any concerns at a Legislative Town Hall in West Hartford next week. Please read below to find out where that event is taking place.

These are the sections in today's email:

  • Three Kings Day Celebration
  • Congratulations to Hartford Mayor & City Council Members
  • Meet Me in Person in West Hartford

Three Kings Day Celebration
Three Kings Day, also known as the Feast of the Epiphany, is a Christian celebration observed on January 6th. It commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. As you can see, three brave men, including my friend Rep. Geraldo Reyes, dressed up, bringing ceremonial gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The three wise men rode on camels in an hour long parade for the first time since the pandemic. They waved to the crowd as they moved along Park Street until Pope Park. Thank you to everyone who came out, the Spanish American Merchants Association (SAMA) team for putting on a great show, and the CICD Puerto Rican Parade for participating and providing music.

Congratulations to Hartford Mayor
& City Council Members
Congratulations to Hartford's newly elected mayor Arunan Arulampalam. He has a vision that includes more affordable housing, better public safety, and improved public education. I was happy to speak with him at Saturday's Three Kings Day parade, and I let him know how proud I am of him and his accomplishments. I look forward to collaborating with Mayor Arulampalam and helping him bring Hartford to new heights.
I also congratulated every member of Hartford City Council who was sworn in on Monday night including City Treasurer Carmen Sierra and newly elected Council President Shirley Surgeon. I eagerly anticipate seeing their work transform our capitol city into an even greater place.
I also want to recognize interim director of the Department of Public Works, Christopher Hayes, who oversaw an amazing response to this past weekend's snowstorm. Crews did a superb job clearing the roads and keeping drivers safe during the city's first major snow storm event in over two years.

Hayes is now ensuring those same crews, city electricians, forestry teams, contractors, and others are in full force to help with any potential flooding or downed trees from last night's wet weather.

Meet Me In Person in West Hartford
My colleagues in the West Hartford delegation and I are coming together to discuss our legislative priorities for 2024. Please join us for a Legislative Town Hall on Tuesday, January 16 from 6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. at West Hartford Town Hall.
I look forward to meeting constituents, hearing your goals for the new year, and addressing any questions you may have as your State Representative.
