Celebrating Our Work To Strengthen Civics Education

September 30, 2025

On National Constitution and Citizenship Day, September 17, I joined my colleagues, educators, and advocates to celebrate our ongoing work to strengthen civics education, engagement, and media literacy in Connecticut. The Civics Education, Civic Engagement, and Media Literacy Task Force recently released its recommendations to close gaps in these areas, ensuring that our state is more civilly prepared, engaged, and informed.

Rep. Kevin Brown, co-chair of the task force and the Education Committee, unpacks his take on for civics and media literacy in CT.

The task force was created through a bill I proudly introduced and sponsored early in my tenure as a representative shortly after I took my oath of office on January 6, 2021. The siege at the U.S. Capitol in Washington that day underscored the urgent need to rebuild trust in our institutions and equip citizens with the tools of democracy.

Two years later, that task force was formally established, and in 2024 it began its work. Over the past year, experts examined civics education and engagement in Connecticut, listening to communities, identifying strengths, and exploring opportunities for improvement.
Our students deserve more opportunities to participate in civics education and to recognize the power of their voices. By engaging young people, we provide them with the skills of citizenship and the ability to discern credible information, knowledge that is vital to the health of our democracy today and in the future. In many ways, we are paying democracy forward, ensuring that it remains strong for generations to come.
