Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation became effective on January 1, 1863, the news took over two and a half years to make its way around the country.

Last year, our state strengthened its “Red Flag” law to protect and save lives of Connecticut residents, and avoid tragedies before they happen. It is estimated that the state's red flag law has prevented 227 suicides since its adoption. Key provisions of this law took effect on June 1, 2022. 

I am heartbroken by the horrors that occurred at Robb Elementary School and I am furious because it didn’t have to be this way. We are so far beyond “enough”. We are in the depths of outrage that as a nation we have failed so spectacularly to take common-sense steps, that a vast majority of Americans agree on, to keep our children from being gunned down in their schools.

Connecticut currently has a $4.8 billion budget surplus and a $3.1 billion rainy day fund. The historic budget adjustment package we passed in the legislative session promotes financial responsibility and makes meaningful investments in our community.
