Everyone Must Be Counted Fairly

March 29, 2019

I am excited to be working on legislation this session to be sure that people are fairly counted and towns have appropriate representation.

House Bill 5611 would ensure that incarcerated people are counted in the towns in which they live, not the towns in which the correctional facility is housed.

It is essential that we get a clean count in the upcoming census. Federal funds, grants and support to states and communities are based on population totals in the census. We must make sure that everyone is counted.

There is some fierce opposition to this bill, but I am excited about the growing support as well. I will continue to work on this issue as the legislative session moves forward.

The CT Mirror covered the issue back in February. Read their story here.
