Dear Neighbor,

Last week I identified some of the ambitious policy proposals we worked on, for example energy and child care. This week I’d like to honor some of the people who helped build New Haven’s strong community.

First, sad news. We lost Jim Rawlings, who after a fulfilling career at Yale New Haven Hospital and leadership of the NAACP, embarked on a mission to advocate for those with sickle cell. This resulted in Michelle’s House, collaborating with the state Department of Public Health, and outreach to policy makers. To highlight issues to legislators and staff, Jim took the time to convene a panel on sickle cell at the state capitol in 2023, among other initiatives.  He will be much missed.

Next, community builders continue their work. I attended Dwight’s Spring Festival, hosted by alders and other leaders for the Dwight community.

Fair Haven Community Health Center cut the ribbon on a 35,600 foot headquarters at a festive celebration honoring Sen Martin Looney. The center began over 50 years ago with volunteer clinicians seeing patients in classrooms in the then Columbus School and was built at first with the support of volunteers, many of whom returned to attend the ceremony. But it could not have achieved its current  level of reach without the dedication of Senator Looney, who grew up nearby, its current director Dr. Suzanne Lagarde,  the capital campaign team, and the Community Foundation.

Over the years the clinic averaged the largest percentage of uninsured patients, and it faces challenges today.  The House GOP budget – awaiting action by the Senate - made radical cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

This expansion is an act of hope.  But the commitment to the health of the community, and its support, bode well for the future.

Sincerely,

Patricia Dillon
