Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On Monday, Feb. 24, and again on Wednesday, March 5, I was proud to vote for bills allocating and ensuring an additional $40 million in funding to special education, giving immediate support to more than 140 school districts in our state and helping to provide the highest quality education for our students.

These critical resources would help ensure students receive the specialized support they need to thrive. Waterford will receive $153,173, and Montville will receive $165,168 in additional funds for special education.

My colleagues and I have heard from cities and towns across Connecticut that special education costs are squeezing local budgets. Students and families are dealing with the repercussions of a broken system, and while the legislature considers long-term solutions, we recognized our school districts needed immediate relief.

Our ultimate goal is to achieve systemic reform to ensure sustainable funding in this arena.

Special education remains a legislative priority for House Democrats this session, and moving forward, we will continue looking for solutions to lower costs, strengthen services, and provide more financial support for our education system to make sure every child has access to the education they deserve.

I am also proud to support and pass needed resources for nonprofit organizations that uphold fundamental human rights and have been targeted for defunding from the federal level.

Committee Work

At a recent Labor and Public Employee Committee meeting, we discussed SB 1370, which, if passed, would require that workers performing off-site fabrication for a public works project be paid prevailing wage rates.

In addition, a group from the DOT showed up in support of "AN ACT EXPANDING COMPENSATION TO DEPENDENTS FOR A DEATH RESULTING FROM AN ACCIDENT" in honor of Andrew DiDomenico, the young DOT worker killed on the job last year.

His family received no benefits because he was not yet married.

The bill would allow surviving family members of an employee to receive compensation for a work-related death when that employee does not have dependents.
