Contractor Bill Passes the House of Representatives

April 25, 2018

State Representative Joshua Hall (D-Hartford) hailed passage of a measure he championed, House Bill #5265, that would require public and private contractors to get paid within 25 days instead of the 30 days under existing law.

Below is a video clip with my remarks on the house floor

Prompt payment is one of the most important issues for construction, specialty trade contractors and suppliers. This issue has grabbed nationwide attention resulting in many states adopting similar laws to protect subcontractors to get prompt payments for their completed work.

By reducing the timeframe, subcontractors will be able to meet their obligations in a more timely fashion than with the potential 90 days of waiting for payment from top tier payments.

Some other states that have passed similar legislation include Arizona, Colorado, New York and Massachusetts.

This measure now goes to the senate for consideration.

The current legislative session adjourns May 9.
