The American Red Cross and Hartford Fire Department are teaming up once again to protect local families, while observing National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11.
On this day, Hartford families will be offered free smoke alarm installations and fire safety education.
Working smoke alarms decrease the risk of death from home fire by 50 percent.
Volunteers will visit homes in Hartford neighborhoods to install smoke alarms, share fire safety information, and help build personalized escape plans to use in case a fire breaks out in the home.
During your home visit, you will receive:
- Installed smoke alarms if no working smoke alarms are present in your home
- Guidance in the development of a Family Disaster Plan
- Valuable emergency preparedness tips and information
- All demonstration and installation services will be performed by Red Cross-trained volunteers and/or licensed/insured professionals
This effort is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign initiative aimed at reducing fire-related deaths and injuries, especially from home fires, the most common disaster the Red Cross responds to across the country. Since the program’s launch, the Red Cross has installed more than 6,500 smoke alarms in Hartford.
