Updates for State Rep. Anne Hughes for July 31, 2025

July 31, 2025

It's important to not let the state of affairs at the federal level overshadow the amazing things that are taking place in Connecticut right now.

To wit: I spent last Thursday at UConn Health for this year’s Summer Research Day, joining students who shared their exciting work with me, state Sen. Saud Anwar and state Reps. Gregg Haddad and Patrick Callahan.

This year, there were 20 TIP Innovation Fellows and 37 Health Research Program participants, including Akhila Komma of Weston.

As I watched this amazing research and innovation, it felt like being a policy student in my seventh year. As a geriatric social worker, it was also exciting to see breakthrough innovations on Medicaid, nursing homes, Alzheimer’s research, passive medication delivery systems, biomarker testing and more.

We need this type of innovation and cutting-edge research, in partnership with entrepreneurial companies to make Connecticut and UConn the flagship of health, and to serve as a model to other states.

I was so excited and honored to witness, as a policymaker, who we need to learn from to make better policy for everyone.

Treasurer's Town Hall

Several constituents and I attended the Treasurer's Town Hall in Newtown on Monday, where State Treasurer Erick Russell led a conversation about Connecticut’s economic outlook and how the federal budget and policy impact the state.

The event was co-sponsored by League of Women Voters of Northern Fairfield County and Indivisible CT.

Thank you Treasurer Russell for the informative discussion.

Congrats, Weston Human Services Dept.
and Senior Activities Center

From the town of Weston:

"The Weston Senior Activities Center and the Weston Human Services Department have been designated as a Southwestern Connecticut Focal Point by the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging (SWCAA)! This prestigious designation recognizes our unwavering commitment to serving older adults and their families in the Weston community.

"According to the Older Americans Act, a Focal Point is a highly visible, trusted organization where older adults, families, and caregivers can turn for information, access to services, and community support. It is both a hub for aging services and a symbol of a community’s dedication to its older residents."

Congratulations, Weston Senior Activities Center and Weston Human Services Department!
