Dear Neighbor,

The House passed several important measures this week over the course of three sessions. Those bills include the following:

  • HB5004 is a House priority bill on the environment that overwhelmingly passed on Thursday after two years of prioritizing. More details to come tomorrow.
  • HB 7402 allows for lawsuits against manufacturers or gun dealers who market or sell firearms to anyone who is likely to commit violence with that firearm. It now heads to the Senate.
  • HB 6442, The Connecticut Hero Act, contains numerous measures honoring veterans, including naming November as Veterans Month, creating new commemorative license plates, honoring women and Puerto Rican veterans, and making it easier for military families to transfer schools.
  • HB 7081 AN ACT CONCERNING LICENSURE PORTABILITY FOR MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS helps address the severe mental health workforce shortage in our state
  • HB 7102 develops a strategic plan to increase the number of birth centers and birthing hospitals in the state and expand the Connecticut Fatherhood Initiative’s (CFI) objectives to include expanding fathers’ role in supporting maternal health.

Protest at the Capitol

While I was legislating during the session on Thursday, I also joined protesters outside the Capitol who were rallying for justice, workers rights, and a stronger Trust Act. We must remain vigilant during such a perilous time in our country when even the bedrock of our legal system -- due process -- is under assault.

Disability Justice

We gathered with members of the community most impacted by the policy discrimination that’s leftover from an era of relegating wheelchair users and those with disabilities as second class citizens. Along with a large group of legislative colleagues, we vowed to address compliance of the wheelchair repair legislation we passed last year, including funding in our budget proposal for the wildly successful micro transit, same day, door-to-door pilot, the Encompass program for rides for seniors age 60 and older who are approved, and riders with disabilities, and addressing the Husky C asset and income discrimination.

Easton Cleanup

Another successful Easton watershed cleanup with Connecticut Clean Communities. I say "successful" because of the amount of trash that was collected. I do I wish we didn't have to be so successful if people took better care of their surroundings.

With that said, a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who are committed to keeping our communities beautiful.

Daffodils in Redding

Speaking of the environment, I made my annual spring visit to field of daffodils in Redding last week. One of my favorite local sojourns, it's a reminder that It's up to us to preserve the natural wonders that are all around us.
