Bills Support Our Veterans and Responsible Tire Disposal

Highlights from Session

My colleagues and I advanced several important bills in the House Chamber last week. Below are some of the highlights.

The House unanimously passed House Bill 5406, the Connecticut Hero Act, which strengthens and expands support for Connecticut veterans in several important ways. The legislation:

  • Establishes a state-run dental care program for eligible veterans
  • Waives motor vehicle operator license fees
  • Expands eligibility for state military medals
  • Requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to warn veterans about predatory "claim sharks"

This legislation improves access to critical services, strengthens protections, and ensures our veterans receive the recognition and respect they deserve.

We also passed House Bill 5039, which increases transparency and accountability for legislative earmarks, funding that legislators allocate each year to nonprofits and community organizations. Under the bill, lawmakers must clearly specify how the funding will be used, and organizations seeking to sub-grant those funds must receive state approval. This measure promotes responsible use of taxpayer dollars and increases public trust.

Additionally, the House advanced legislation to strengthen Connecticut’s tire stewardship program by requiring retail stores to fully participate by July 1, 2027. This step aims to reduce illegal dumping and prevent the buildup of old tires in our neighborhoods, a persistent source of blight and environmental harm. By improving tire collection and ensuring responsible tire disposal, the measure will help keep our streets cleaner, reduce public health risks, and bring new life into our communities.

The Senate now has until May 6 to act on these measures.
 

Windham Tech Victory Parade

Our entire community is so proud of the Windham Technical High School's boys' basketball team for capturing the CIAC Division IV State Championship. I was honored to join the players, parents, students, educators, and fans at last Friday’s victory parade to celebrate this remarkable and historic achievement.
The Tigers made history as the first team from a Connecticut technical high school to win a state basketball title since 1967. It’s an accomplishment that speaks volumes to their hard work, discipline, and determination both on and off the court. 

The parade started at the high school and made its way through town. As you can see in these pictures, the celebration wrapped up at the Shaboo Stage at Jillson Square. Congratulations to the players, coaches, families, and supporters for an unforgettable season!
 

Renters' Rebate Program

Connecticut’s Renters’ Rebate Program is now open to eligible renters who are elderly or living with a disability and meet certain income requirements.

Qualified applicants may receive rebates of up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single individuals. The rebate amount is determined using a graduated income scale, as well as the total rent and utility payments (excluding telephone) made during the previous calendar year.

Applicants must submit their paperwork through our assessor’s office or a designated social service agency. The application period is now open and will run through September 30. Please note that no extensions are permitted, and all applications must be received by the municipality no later than September 30.

Horizons Spring Splash

The annual fundraiser, which will be held on Saturday, May 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Horizons (127 Babcock Hill Road), brings people together not only to celebrate but also to support a mission that truly matters. Every ticket, every smile, and every moment shared helps Horizons continue to grow and reach even more people.
