Berger-Girvalo Pushing For Local Control In Zoning Bill

May 20, 2021

(HARTFORD, CT) – With the passage of a pivotal and amended zoning bill that will update Connecticut's zoning processes, Representative Aimee Berger-Girvalo (D-Ridgefield) advocated for her constituents and pushed for continued local control in zoning decisions.

HB 6107, proposes necessary updates to Connecticut's 100-year-old zoning regulations. The Planning and Development Committee worked cohesively with experts, local stakeholders, and community leaders to draft up-to-date and inclusive zoning reforms that provide municipalities with modern tools while still retaining local control.

“During the public hearing process, my constituents made it very clear that they wanted Ridgefield to remain in control of Ridgefield’s planning decisions,” said Rep. Berger-Girvalo. “I advocated for my district, with helpful input from our own Planning and Zoning committee, to ensure that while we make long-overdue updates to our state's zoning laws, we also protect our community's local decision-making control. The bill we passed today is written to give communities the tools they need to address the very real, state-wide, affordable housing shortage, while recognizing the fact that one size does not fit all.”

The bill passed in the House today maintains and strengthens local zoning control and creates safeguards to bolster local economic development, addresses environmental concerns, and promotes diverse accessible housing to all 169 communities across Connecticut.
